Do you know our filter bags? Bag-type housings are kind of equipment that are increasingly used for more filtration processes, even in applications where cartridge filters were traditionally used.
Next, we explain the advantages of bag filters compared to cartridge filters.
1. Filter area and differential pressure
A standard size 02 filter bag has a diameter of 180mm. and a length of 812 mm., which provides a filtration surface of approximately 0.5 m2.
A 10” (254 mm) long “melt blown” type absolute classification filter cartridge has an external diameter of 60 mm, providing a filtration surface area of approximately 0.055 m2.
Therefore, to achieve the same amount of filter surface as a size 02 bag, nine 10” cartridges would be needed.
The increase in filter surface provided by a filter bag also has the effect of reducing the initial pressure drop throughout the filtration system, making the bags have a longer working life compared to cartridge filters.
2. Flow
A standard size 02 filter bag can absorb a flow rate of up to 40 m3/h with a relatively low pressure drop. For this same flow rate, between 30 and 40 10” cartridges would be needed or about 10 units for a 40” cartridge, since typically, for a cartridge the acceptable flow rate to have an acceptable pressure loss would be 1 m3/h. for every 10” of cartridge.
Additionally, the inlet diameter of a type 02 filter bag is 180 mm, while the core diameter of a cartridge is 1” (25 mm). Therefore there is a much greater flow restriction with cartridges, which leads to greater pressure drops.
3. Storage and waste
Following the same principle of savings shown in the filtration capacity of a bag compared to a cartridge, as fewer elements are required for the same flow rate, the space necessary to store these consumables is less, providing significant space savings.
And in the same way, by having greater filtration capacity comparing 1 bag vs 1 cartridge, element changes will be less frequent, helping to reduce waste generated in the process where they are installed.
4. Time and ease of maintenance
During equipment maintenance, the time to change a filter bag compared to the time to change a cartridge is shorter, as per the same flow to be filtered, fewer filter bags are needed, which speeds up their change when they have reached the point of saturation.
Additionally, with #prespur filter housings that incorporate quick-open lids, it is much easier and more comfortable for operators to maintain bag filters.
5. Cost
From the points above, it is clear that because fewer filter elements are needed in a bag filter system, significant cost savings can be realized by selecting this type of filtration compared to a cartridge filter kit.
CONCLUSIONS
When deciding whether the most appropriate filtration system for an application is a bag filter unit or a cartridge filter, many factors must be considered. Some of these are analyzed in the previous points, although others related to the process itself where the filtration application must be installed should be considered.
But given the advancement in filter media technology to construct the bags along with the appropriate housing and manufacturing methods applied at PRESCAD, filter bags should be seriously considered as suitable filtration equipment for a multitude of applications.
The cost savings can be significant, not only in the cost of purchasing the filtration equipment, but also in the costs it can provide to the process, providing savings in storage space, elimination of downtime, etc.
#prespur bag-type filtration equipment, whether single-bag or multi-bag, is capable of achieving high performance and reliability, while being a practical and versatile solution for any type of process in the process and chemical industries.
